City of Evanston Responds to New Crosswalk Law

It has been five months since the Illinois State Legislature passed the new law requiring all motorists to "stop for all pedestrians at crosswalks." The previous law only asked motorists to "yield and stop when necessary."

The City of Evanston hasn't wasted any time in responding to this new law. Multiple sites throughout the City now display new signage at pedestrian crosswalks. These sites were selected by the City's engineering staff as part of a trial. The purpose of the trial is to help determine which type of signage is most effective under certain conditions. The engineering staff selected the trial sites at key crosswalks and is monitoring them in order to ensure that the instructions for motorists and pedestrians are less confusing and more effective. This is a work in progress; once the analysis has been completed, additional sites will be chosen, along with the most effective signage for particular crosswalks.
