New Law Requires Drivers to Stop for Pedestrians at Crosswalks

Illinois drivers are now required to stop and yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk whether or not a traffic signal is in place. A new law, enacted on July 21,requires all drivers, including bicyclists, to come to a complete stop for a pedestrian at any crosswalk, whether or not it is identified by stoplights, stop signs, or street markings.

The legislation was supported by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and Illinois State Police. The Evanston Police Department advises all motorized vehicles and bicycles to stop for all pedestrians at all crosswalks-that is, whenever a sidewalk leads into the street, whether or not the crosswalk is marked. They also advise pedestrians always to use caution when crossing a street.

The fine in Evanston for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk starts at $50.

The City of Evanston recently changed the pedestrian crosswalk sign on Chicago Avenue by the Jewel Food store, indicating that drivers must now stop for a pedestrian in the crosswalk, not simply yield and stop if necessary.
